Stones fly in Largo; society is thus saved
By HOWARD TROXLER
Published March 1, 2007
Steve Stanton stood in front of the world to announce he would become Susan, and the world replied: You're fired. So much for loyalty and ability. After 14 years as Largo's city manager, Stanton went from trusted chief executive to ex-employee in a week. Out of the din of the past few days, and the comments from Tuesday night's meeting of the Largo City Commission, three alleged justifications for firing Stanton emerged: (1) Being a transsexual is a sin. (2) Being a transsexual is disgusting to society. (3) Being a transsexual is too disruptive for a city manager in a leadership position. As for the first claim, "sinner" had better not be a disqualification for employment, or else we are all in trouble. I want to see these headlines: City fires confessed coveter False-witness bearer canned Official fails to honor Sabbath, is removed Well, why not? After all, those sins rank right up there in the Judeo-Christian top ten, along with idolatry, adultery and the rest. Heck, "transsexual" isn't even listed in the original instruction manual. But those are sins that even people sitting in church pews commit. Better to focus on somebody else. Phooey. Let's reject the idea that "sin" gets you fired, even if one preacher in the crowd Tuesday night confidently declared that Jesus himself would have been leading the charge for Stanton's job. Next comes the "too disgusting" part, which is an evolving standard. Other people at times in America also have been considered too disgusting by the majority to be allowed among decent people: Divorced women. Unwed mothers. People in wheelchairs or with other physical differences. Ethnic minorities. Gays and lesbians. Whoops, that one's still partly in effect. (I wonder, though, if Stanton had announced "merely" that he was gay, if he would have been fired quite as quickly.) This brings us to the "too disruptive" claim, and yet even here we ought to be careful. We also have used "too disruptive" to justify racial segregation, educational and professional barriers against women and lots of other ills. The test of "disruptive" ought to be whether someone's status actively interferes with his or her job, period - not whether somebody else finds it distasteful to work with a divorcee, a Protestant or a left-hander. So if Stanton stayed, but proved himself unreliable, unstable, unable to do his job, then the City Commission would have grounds for removing him. As it was, such actual track record was not needed: One commissioner "sensed" Tuesday night that Stanton had lost his ability. It is a tough line of work, being a city manager, and make no mistake - the City Commission did not need any grounds at all to fire him. City managers are hired guns who serve at the pleasure of their bosses. In his time in charge, Stanton fired plenty of people himself. As somebody said in a movie once, it's just business. Still, I keep picturing him making that announcement, a mixture of dread and hope in his face. Dread won, as it turned out. Society is thus protected. How righteous we all are.

Where were you when all the exemplary employees that woorked for many many more years than Stanton for the city and some even put there lives on the line for the citizens were railroaded and fired. You are hands down the most biased newspaper.

...most biased paper in the non-terrorist world. Fact is you should speak of the other side not just the one pushing YOUR agenda. You are really misleading the public and I see Steve has sucked you in too.

I believe Ms. Stanton has the right to be whomever her mind defines her. Gender like sexual preferance is biological and not a choice. I think it is time for someone to stand up for the rights for those "born in the wrong body."

This has made planning my US trip a little easier and cheaper, I have no interest in putting money into a local economy that supports such bigotry. I'll make sure to give the area a very wide berth. The world is laughing, be ashamed.

Simply put, some will engage in perverse acts. Whether it's a foot fetish, necrophilia, preying on children, whatever; these people aren't wired right. Should we accept such behavior? I don't think so.

It is well known among City workers how poorly he treats subordinates. Ironic he now cries foul and asks for sympathy and compassion from those same individuals. He may be a competent in his job but not liked or respected among City employees.

The Commissioners don't need cause to fire the city manager. If voters want Ms. Stanton(may) back-vote in new com'iser-who will rehire shem and move on to issue of importance. USA where votes count for somethink.

Great points regarding the Ten Commandments. I am a conservative, evangelical Christian opposed to the "Gay Agenda", but this situation is different. It is a shame; we should pray for Steve as he goes forward and for the commissioners to grow spines.

Great Article! Thank you very much. I'm proud that so many in our tri-county community see the plain discrimination and are standing up for Stanton.

To the City of Largo Commissioners:
You who are without sin, cast the first stone. But you just use the Bible to judge others never yourselves.

Hi:
I am a transsexual but nothing like the stereotypes you see on Jerry Springer. I fit into society as an ordinary, everyday woman. From my viewpoint I see the move to fire Steve/Susan Stanton as veiled discrimination.

I notice that the extremists are casting aspersions. Again. False witness is a worse sin.
Gender issues are not 'gay' issues. But, 35% of you are too ignorant to realize truth and honesty, as you have't expressed those traits.
We'll pray for you!

Thank you for this well-written article. I'm impressed with how you have presented the facts without inserting heavy emotions. Personally, I am so outraged by Stanton's firing that I can't even discuss it rationlly.

Just because someone is a transsexual doesn't' mean they are gay. Gender and sexual orientation are two separate things.

For 14 years, he has been receiving good performance appraisals. Now, because he wants to be what he feels he always has been, they fire him? Oh, please. I hope he sues for wrongful termination.

"I wonder, though, if Stanton had announced "merely" that he was gay, if he would have been fired quite as quickly." -- Why not? Then he'd be an ADMITTED LIAR/DECEIVER (to wife, on employment app, etc) thus unworthy to serve in city's top post.

He and his counsel should have seen this coming. I'm not from Largo, but think it unfair to fault Largo. Are there any cities looking to hire Sue for a high profile position? This whole fiasco shows bad judgment and a complete lack of self-restraint

Just remember who voted to oust Stanton and vote accordingly at the next election. The only way to stop this narrow-minded self-righteous 'immoral minoritiy' from their actions is to get them out of office.

14 years of dedicated and exemplary service count for nothing in the eyes of Largo's City Commissioners. Frightening to see that Largo's so-called leaders continue to blindly lead their constituents. Vote them out!

I know in this modern age that anything goes with most of the media. I have only one question. If Stanton desided to go to A rest room (as A woman) would you want your wife or daughter in there while he or she or what ever was in there?

I also really enjoyed (?) the quote declaring Jesus' feelings on the subject. Perhaps James Cameron will find some female DNA in his 'Lost Tomb'; that should give the stone-throwers a truly whopping target!

Excellent commentary, Howard! What was even more alarming was the on-line poll - it showed 5000 to fire vs 2000 to retain when I participated. Yikes!

I do not know who Stanton fired and am already weary of the story. Could we get over it? Liberal label as usual... the "moral majority" is alive and well in Largo.

I fear for our country. The principles it was founded on have been tossed aside for religious strong arming at every turn. We have become the "Empire" that our fore-fathers fled for Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. He NEEDS to sue them.

Seems like Jason is a "conservative". So naturally, anyone that might not look, act, think,or worship like him IS THE DEVIL!!! And it seems Mr. Stanton has already been convicted of all sorts of evil deeds, his 14 yrs of exemplry service notwithstanding
