Modern mythic beings surprise park visitors

Leapin' lizards! What's that creature crouching in Boca Ciega Millennium Park? Beginning Saturday, visitors to the park will see Leslie Fry's installations of sculptures dotting the wooded landscape. Her sculptures have a high level of realism that she infuses with fantastical symbols and metaphors, sometimes to unsettling effect. The sculpture shown, part human, part reptile, is kin to the sphinxes and satyrs of ancient myths who inhabited a classical bucolic countryside. A headdress and mantle resembling architectural facades give it urban-legend status.

The series, titled "Wild Life," debuts during Discovery Day and Nature Festival at the park, 12410 74th Ave. N, Seminole, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Fry will conduct guided walks throughout the day. The festival also includes live music, children's activities and exhibits from Pinellas County Animal Services, native plant nurseries and more. (727) 588-4882.
