Current movies recommended by the Times:

1 Pan's Labyrinth - The best film of 2006, and winner of three Academy Awards, is a harrowing fairy tale concocted in the mind of a young girl and set against the terrors of postwar Spanish fascism.

2 The Departed - The Oscar winner for best picture and director is available on DVD, but see it on the big screen at Tampa Theatre on Friday and Saturday.

3 Notes on a Scandal - Judi Dench and Cate Blanchett earned Oscar nominations for this smartly written, intense drama of sexual obsessions.

4 Bridge to Terabithia - Schoolmates escape adolescent pressure in a beast-filled kingdom of their imagining. Bring extra tissues for tears.

5 The Queen - Helen Mirren's portrayal of Queen Elizabeth after the death of Princess Diana richly deserved her best actress Academy Award.
