FHP releases names of two in fatal collision

BROOKSVILLE

The Florida Highway Patrol released the names of people involved in a fatal crash that happened south of Brooksville on Monday. A sport utility vehicle was heading west on Ayers Road at 4 p.m. It ran a stop sign and smashed into a gray Pontiac heading south on Culbreath Road, the FHP said. A passenger in the Pontiac, Pearl Brightman, 86, of Wisconsin, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the SUV was Barry Stalford, 27, of Brooksville. No charges have been filed, and the FHP said it is still trying to determine why Stalford ran the stop sign.

Help cleanup in south Brooksville

A neighborhood cleanup in south Brooksville is planned for Saturday, starting at 9 a.m. at Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Twigg Street. The cleanup will end about 12:30 p.m., when volunteers will be served lunch. The cleanup is being organized by the Hernando County Sheriff's Office District 3 COPPS Unit, along with representatives from Code Enforcement and the South Brooksville Coalition. It was initiated by Deputies Dane Jenkins and Will Power. Anyone wishing to participate in the cleanup should report to MLK and Twigg by 9 a.m. Volunteers should bring their own supplies such as gloves, rakes, shovels and wheelbarrows. Reading festival set for Saturday

The Hernando County Reading Festival will be from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the West Hernando/S.T. Foggia Branch Library, 6335 Blackbird Ave. Admission is free. There will be a variety of activities and games, face painting, clowns and door prizes. The first 300 children to arrive will receive free goody bags. Special guests include Bay News 9 meteorologist Brian McClure, Tony the Balloon Guy and character appearances by the Cat in the Hat and the St. Petersburg Times mascot Spot the Newshound. Food will be available to purchase and there will be a Scholastic Book fair.
