Picnic for those from the Mountain State

If you're from West Virginia, this event is for you. The annual West Virginia Day Picnic runs from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday at Brandon Community Center, 502 E Sadie St.

All West Virginia natives and guests are invited for just a $1 donation.

A concession stand will serve hot dogs and cold drinks. The event includes door prizes. Call 689-5428 or 633-4363.

Softball tournament helps athletic programs

Sixteen teams play softball on Saturday until there is only one left standing. The Bob Reinhold Memorial Softball Tournament starts at 8 a.m. at the J.C. Handley Recreation Complex, 3104 S Kings Ave.

Proceeds go to athletic booster clubs at Armwood, Brandon and Bloomingdale high schools, the Brandon Cowboys Youth Football League and North Brandon Little League. Sponsorships from the 2006 tournament helped to raise $6,000 for local athletic programs.

Join the American Veterans Post 44 in its inaugural Educational Child Safety Event on Saturday at 318 Pauls Drive.

Bring your children, grandchildren and friends in for free fingerprinting, child registration and other safety information.

Honorary candidate is out for your real vote

Honorary mayoral candidate Mike Wick wants your vote. You can meet Wick and sign up for a chance to win a 2007 Harley-Davidson Sportster at a fundraiser tonight.

The event starts at 7:30 at the Showman's Club, 6915 Riverview Drive. Tickets for Wick's birthday celebration are $25 per couple and include a performance by "Elvis." Call 677-9494.

Get exercise while walking for a cause

Cancer survivors and friends are teaming up for a very long walk. The annual Relay for Life event starts at 6 p.m. March 9 at the Bloomingdale High track, 1700 E Bloomingdale Ave.

The event lasts until the morning of March 10.

Dogs will have their day at DOG event

They're puttin' on the dog in Sun City Center.

Owners and onlookers are getting ready for the Sixth Annual Dog Show, which starts at 10 a.m. March 10.

The sponsoring Dog Owners Group will judge canines by size rather than by breed.

DOG will also name a Best of Show winner and spice up the event with a bake sale.

The event takes place at the Community Hall, 1910 S Pebble Beach Blvd.

The Brandon Cowboys Youth Football and Cheerleading Association holds open registration for new players and cheerleaders Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon at the North Brandon Sports Complex, 3099 Kingsway Road.

WIMAUMA

VAN IS SOURCE OF TRANSPORTATION, COMMUNICATION

Children of migrant workers and low-income families now have another way to get to medical appointments from the Wimauma Academy, thanks to a grant from the Mabel & Ellsworth Charitable Foundation.

The foundation gave $19,000 for a 2006 Dodge Caravan to transport students. The school will use the van to get students to doctor's appointments or to contact parents who do not have a telephone.
