  • For their own good
Fifty years ago, they were screwed-up kids sent to the Florida School for Boys to be straightened out. But now they are screwed-up men, scarred by the whippings they endured. Read the story and see a video and portrait gallery.

LifeSouth Community Blood Center is asking for blood donations to help supply LifeSouth centers in Alabama communities that were affected by Thursday's tornadoes. While all blood types are needed, there is a pressing need for Type O blood. LifeSouth sent 50 units of Type O blood to Dothan - to help cover potential blood needs for storm victims - despite an existing shortage of Type O blood in Florida centers. To donate, you must be at least 17 and weigh at least 110 pounds. Photo ID is required during the donation. The local LifeSouth facility is at 12395 Cortez Blvd. in Spring Hill. For center hours and bloodmobile locations, call 596-2002 or visit the Web site at www.lifesouth.org.
