SEFFNER - Senior Jared Simon was 3-for-3 with a home run and two RBIs as Armwood defeated Class 5A, District 8 rival King 4-3 Friday.
Simon opened scoring in the first inning with a two-out home run to deep center, his first homer of the season.
"When you're a scrappy little team like we are and you fight like we can, good things will happen," Hawks coach Mike Wrenn said. "Simon came out for us with a great start and set the tone."
Armwood (6-0) made it 2-0 in the third after Scott Spencer, who reached base with a double off of the fence in center, scored on a Simon single. The Lions answered in the fourth, tying it with RBIs from Sean Buckley and Jared MacBeth. Buckley went 2-for-3, while MacBeth got an RBI in the sixth.
Armwood scored two in the fourth with Joe Cartwright plating Jared Chancy with a single, and Gaby Perez scoring Cartwright on a triple up the middle.
"The guys did a great job of getting a run here, a run there. A run here and there," Wrenn said.
Robert Benincasa improved to 3-0, striking out four in five innings and giving up three runs. Simon picked up the save, allowing one hit with two strikeouts.
Junior Cody Johnson took the loss for King, pitching a complete game and striking out five.
