BROOKSVILLE - Hernando boys basketball coach Jeff Laing resigned after six seasons at the helm of the Leopards, athletic director Brent Gaustad said Friday. Hired in 2001, Laing directed the program to winning seasons in 2001-02 (15-14) and 2003-04 (16-12). Hernando has won just 25 games combined over the past three seasons, finishing under .500 three straight years. Laing finishes with a record of 66-93 in his six years. Gaustad said the school likely won't fill the position until April, when it has a better idea of what teaching positions it has available. Attempts to reach Laing, who is also the junior varsity baseball coach, were unsuccessful. The school also announced a new girls soccer coach. Rick Ahrens, who started the girls program at the school in 1993, is returning. Ahrens previously had coached soccer at the school for 11 years, four with the boys and two with both the boys and the girls. "He brings back knowledge, continuity," Gaustad said.
