A new purple challenge for a world of whiners

Wear the bracelet for 21 days without complaining.

TAMPA - Stubbed a toe? Cut off by a driver in traffic? Computer crashed?

Before kvetching, consider this: a new purple bracelet that challenges people to stop complaining.

Participants attempt to wear the bracelet on the same wrist for 21 days without complaining, criticizing or gossiping.

Failure means moving the bracelet to the other wrist, and the process starts again.

A Kansas City, Mo., Unity church came up with the idea in the fall. People magazine features the no-complaint bracelet in its March 12 issue.

At Tampa Unity Church, which distributed 150 bracelets in February, Jim Atkins is one of three parishioners to complete the challenge.

He credits the effort with restoring his sense of humor, improving communication with his wife and making him more agreeable.

"The market took a dive the other day, and I didn't care," said Atkins, 61, amazed by his transformation.

So far, the Missouri church has distributed more than 180,000 bracelets nationwide. One pastor, however, sent them back.

He complained about the bracelets' quality.

For information, call Tampa Unity Church at (813) 870-0731. Times researcher Cathy Wos contributed to this report.

Heath, war has been a part of the Middle East since time began and ALWAYS will be. God told David the sword would never leave his house, and it hasn't. Sometimes war is necessary. Without war, America would not exist and you would not be free!

My boss needs one BADLY!!!

James, I got Michelle's point. Just can't agree. It might take a little more effort for some to find the good in any given situation, but it is there if you look. This is not about mind control but making a concious choice to aschew negative habits

Whiners I can deal with. How about "Stop Shooting" bracelets? Or "Stop Bombing"? Or "Stop Killing Each Other"? Think of the difference they could make in the Middle East and the so-called Holy Land.

Ironically, Steve and Michelle both seem to get the point of the article, but fail to see each others' points.

Purple is also the color for domestic violence awareness. Are they saying battered women are whiners?
by russell 03/05/07 09:12 AM
wow what a breakthrough.....they should pass them uot to the homless, but i bet rubber bands would work as well
by james 03/04/07 07:51 PM
i nominate 'michelle' here to receive a purple bracelet.
by Steve 03/04/07 06:40 PM
Michelle, I would like to get you one of those bracelets. There is enough negativity in the world with out more mindless spewing of it over everyday trifilngs. The bracelet is a tool used to remind us that we can improve outr social skills. Cool!

I could use this. I was voted the biggest complainer in high school and nothing has changed. Nothing makes me gripe more than all you folks in my way on the roads. I may try it...

i heard the more you whine, the longer god lets you live. i might live forever.
by Michelle 03/04/07 12:16 PM
Perfect! Stifle dissent by "challenging" people to keep their mouths shut. I think it's great that a Christian Church is spearheading the effort. How ironically appropriate. Talk about mind control of the masses...

Have a heart adopt a pet already has a purple bracelet. It sounds great as long as no one has to stop at a gas pump.

"Serenity Me Now"... "Serenity Me Now"......"Serenity Me Now" ...... people who don't stand for anything, fall for everything !
by Steve 03/04/07 09:57 AM
Brilliant idea! A positive approach to thoughtless regativity! The first step in breaking a bad habit is the acknowlegement of it.
