Cast early vote on penny tax, city elections

Election day is eight days away. But you needn't wait until then to cast your vote on extending the Penny for Pinellas or your municipal elections. Early voting for the March 13 election is under way, Monday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Pinellas voters can cast early ballots at the Pinellas County Courthouse Elections Office, 315 Court St., Room 117, Clearwater; Election Services Center, 13001 Starkey Road, Largo; or the Elections Office in St. Petersburg, 501 First Ave. N. Mayor's team wins walking contest

When the challenge was issued, Mayor Frank Hibbard smiled broadly and asked: What do we get when we win? Weeks later, the city of Clearwater defeated a handful of other local, city and county leaders in a walking contest. As a way to encourage healthy living, local governments decided to compete in the friendly "2007 Step Up" contest. Council members and commissioners put on pedometers and started hiking. The idea was to see which group of leaders could average the most paces from Feb. 12-16. Clearwater won with an average of 49,585 steps. The answer to Hibbard's question: Clearwater is now the proud owner of a 9-inch-tall trophy with a winged shoe sitting atop a post.

Adventure in Arts exhibit continues

A national tour of American art from Long Island's Guild Hall, "An Adventure in the Arts," continues through April 29 at the Gulf Coast Museum of Art, 12211 Walsingham Road. The show includes 75 paintings, sculpture, prints, mixed media and photography by such artists as Willem de Kooning, Childe Hassam, Jackson Pollock, Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein. Gallery hours are from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday. Call 518-6833.

Get facts about Medicare Part D

Medicare Part D have you confused? The Oaks of Clearwater is sponsoring an informational program about the federal prescription drug program at 2 p.m. Thursday in the Oaks Auditorium, 420 Bay Ave. AARP Florida volunteer speakers will discuss new prescription drug benefits and the drug discount card. The event is open to the public and light refreshments will be served.
