Did American Beauty receive an Oscar? If so, what for?

The film American Beauty won five Academy Awards out of the eight for which it was nominated. It was the 1999 Best Picture. It also won for directing Sam Mendes, writing (Alan Ball), cinematography (Conrad L. Hall) and best actor (Kevin Spacey). Nominations that did not pan out for the movie were best actress (Annette Bening), original score (Thomas Newman) and film editing (Tariq Anwar).
