TAMPA - Hours after someone shot him multiple times, Tedric Dewayne Maynard, 25, died early Monday at Tampa General Hospital.

Maynard was gunned down Sunday evening near the entrance to Southwest Port Tampa Park. Several bullets pierced Maynard's upper body, police say.

He was taken to TGH, where he died at 12:56 a.m., said police spokeswoman Andrea Davis.

Police don't know the motive for the shooting. No one had been arrested by Monday evening, Davis said.

The suspect was described as a medium-built black man with a red cap and a red shirt, she said.

Detectives returned Monday morning to the scene of the shooting at S Morton Street and W Richardson Avenue to try and piece together what happened.

The shooting happened in front of a sign honoring another slain young Tampa man, Kwane Doster, a Vanderbilt University football player who grew up in Port Tampa. Doster was fatally shot while sitting in a car in Ybor City.

Maynard's family could not be reached for comment.

Maynard has been arrested 20 times and served two stints in state prison, state records show.

His arrests began when he was a teenager and include aggravated assault with a weapon, carrying a concealed weapon and cocaine distribution, according to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.
