Tent city's relocation is delayed

ST. PETERSBURG - A plan to relocate about 75 homeless people living in tents near downtown will take longer than expected, city officials said Monday. The city had hoped to move the people from First Avenue N and 18th Street to a vacant lot on 15th Street N starting this past Friday. But now that move may not happen until this Friday at the earliest, St. Petersburg Deputy Mayor Goliath Davis said. Liability issues are causing the delay, Davis said. The new site is owned by the St. Vincent de Paul charity, but will be leased to the city as part of the plan. "The lawyers are talking right now," said Davis, who said he believes a solution will be reached. City officials also must prepare the site for the influx of as many as 75 tents. Along with adding new fencing, city officials said they will level the ground on the property. That work has not started and could take three or four days, Davis said.
