Deadline for registering to vote is Monday

Monday is the deadline for people to register to vote in the April 10 municipal elections. People in New Port Richey, Port Richey and Zephyrhills will be picking council members, and Port Richey voters also will choose a mayor and vote on a nonbinding referendum on dissolving the city. Market evacuated after bomb scare
Monday morning, Winn-Dixie, Moon Lake Road. Phone rings. Young man asks about specials. "What specials do you want?" the cashier asks. "The meat specials," he replies. She transfers him to the meat department. Assistant manager picks up. "There's a (expletive) bomb in the beer aisle," the caller says. He hangs up. This is all according to a sheriff's incident report. Assistant manager calls 911. Manager evacuates the store. Deputies search, find no bombs. No one gets the prankster's number because the store's phones don't have caller ID. Deputies clear the scene at 9:13 a.m., leaving beer supplies intact.

Sweetbay opens in West Pasco today
Sweetbay Supermarket will open its first West Pasco store today at 9101 Little Road. Sweetbay, which is replacing Kash n' Karry stores throughout Florida, will hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 10 a.m. To demonstrate its commitment to the community, the chain says it will donate $1,500 to the Pasco County Parks and Recreation Department for playground equipment at the proposed Lake Lisa Park on Regency Boulevard. Sweetbay opened its first Pasco County store last year in Wesley Chapel and opened three stores in Zephyrhills last week. Eight more Sweetbays will open in Pasco this year.

Officials will set up traffic checkpoint
New Port Richey police and Pasco County sheriff's deputies will conduct a traffic safety checkpoint in the area north of Congress Street from 9 p.m. Friday until 1:30 a.m. Saturday. Among other things, they will be on the lookout for drunken drivers.
Animals seized at flea market
The Humane Society of Pinellas seized 22 animals Sunday from a Zephyrhills vendor at the Oldsmar Flea Market, citing concerns with overcrowded living conditions. Page 6
