  • For their own good
Fifty years ago, they were screwed-up kids sent to the Florida School for Boys to be straightened out. But now they are screwed-up men, scarred by the whippings they endured. Read the story and see a video and portrait gallery.

Shelf life

Look for these new items at your grocery store.

Strawberry ice cream that's local

Plant City strawberries are the stars in a special edition of Winn-Dixie's Prestige Ice Cream. The ice cream is billed as "a strawberry lover's dream," and we agree. Big chunks of flavorful red berries are laced throughout the cream. It just may be the next best thing to homemade. The ice cream will be available through the summer for $4.19 a half gallon.

Flavorful new flatbreads

New Flatbreads from Stouffer's Corner Bistro offers crisp, seasoned breads with restaurant-inspired toppings. The flatbreads are available in four varieties - Chicken, Bacon and Spinach on a Basil and Garlic Seasoned Flatbread, Steak Fajita on a Smoked Chipotle Seasoned Flatbread, Shrimp and Roasted Garlic on a Herb Seasoned Flatbread, and Margherita on a Basil Parmesan Seasoned Flatbread. Find them in the frozen food section for $3.99.

More organic macaroni

Maybe this is harmonic convergence. About the same time that Kraft came out with Organic Macaroni & Cheese in the familiar blue box, Annie's Homegrown rolled out its own blue box of Classic Macaroni & Cheese, a milder-tasting cheese with organic elbow pasta. Annie's promises an all-organic version soon. Kraft's organic mac line includes a traditional cheddar with elbow noodles, as well as a white cheddar with pasta shells, just like, well, Annie's long-standing favorite.

Annie's natural pastas are $1.49 a box; organic pastas are $1.89.

Easter candy peek: Sugar-free Peeps?!

Every year along about now we start to see Easter candy. (Actually, it starts well before Valentine's Day.)

As has recently become customary, the folks who make marshmallow Peeps have new versions this year. Last year we got a Peep in a hollow milk chocolate egg; this year there's a crispy milk chocolate egg.

How about sugar-free Peeps? Yes, they are out there. Now you can enjoy the marshmallow wonders without feeling guilty about the sugar. But if there's no sugar, just what's in the Peep? They come in packs of three for less than $2.
