On Wednesday, the Hernando Sheriff's Office released its final report about last week's escape at the Hernando jail - the third escape in a little over a year. The report explained how jail Lt. Mary Mills inadvertently unlocked the cell door that allowed Kenneth Farris to escape. According to the Sheriff's Office, Mills was in the control room looking at the doors through a camera. She thought she was unlocking one door but ended up unlocking another one. Farris walked to freedom. The report also says the jail didn't realize an inmate had escaped until roughly 4:15 p.m. - about three hours after Farris escaped. Mills was fired from the jail last week. The report also said that when Farris was confronted by the guards out in the parking lot, he gave them an excuse and fled. The jail called the Sheriff's Office about a suspicious person hanging out around the jail, but at the time no one realized that there had been an escape.
