  • For their own good
Fifty years ago, they were screwed-up kids sent to the Florida School for Boys to be straightened out. But now they are screwed-up men, scarred by the whippings they endured. Read the story and see a video and portrait gallery.

Property appraiser will take questions

Residents who want to learn more about their property values or complain about rising taxes will get their chance when the Apollo Beach Civic Association meets Thursday.

Hillsborough County Property Appraiser Rob Turner will address the group, which meets at 7 p.m. at the Apollo Beach Recreation Center, 664 Golf and Sea Blvd.

Turner, who is in his third term as property appraiser, brings a long list of civic accomplishments to the position.

They include a 2005 presidential citation from the International Association of Assessment Officers and membership on the governor's property tax reform committee in 2006.

For more information, e-mail the group at apollobchcivicassoc@ tampabay.rr.com.

Races combine running, biking and canoeing

Get in shape and help the community at the second annual Eco Quest on March 31 at Alafia River State Park.

The Emergency Care Help Organization is sponsoring the event at the park, 14326 S County Road 39, which involves a pair of races starting at 9 a.m.

The original Eco Quest adventure race combines a 4-mile run, 6-mile bicycle ride and 3 miles of scenic canoeing. Registration is $100.

A Mini-Quest race registration $30 includes a 1-mile run, a 1-mile bike ride and one-third mile by canoe.

Emergency Care Help Organization helped more than 7,000 residents in 2006.

The nonprofit organization supplies emergency food and clothing to eastern Hillsborough County residents.

For information, call 685-0935.

RUSKIN

New leader takes over chamber of commerce

The next Hillsborough County hot spot for growth has a new leader. Melanie Morrison, who is completing her term as the honorary mayor of Apollo Beach, has taken the reins as executive director of the Ruskin Chamber of Commerce. She succeeds Suzy Lacey, who is retiring.

The newcomer is soaking up all she can about Ruskin history and heritage. Her goals include adding to the chamber's 260 members. Morrison said she is sold on the chamber's value to its members.

"Any time other members need a service, they start out by looking at membership lists," said Morrison, 29. "It's a way to step outside of the box of normal advertising."

The new job means that Morrison will leave the bulk of her former job, helping to run the Freedom Boat Club, to her husband, Matt. Based at Lands End Marina in Apollo Beach, the club makes powerboats available to customers who pay a membership fee.

TAMPA

Adopt a pet at the spring home show

Adopting a pet becomes a little bit easier for those who can get to the Florida State Fairgrounds this weekend.

No More Homeless Pets in Hillsborough County, an animal aid group, has assembled a lineup of puppies and kittens, dogs and cats sure to please the eye and soften the heart.

The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals has used pet euthanasia statistics to make the Tampa Bay area a target market for increased adoption efforts, along with Austin, Texas; Biloxi, Miss.; and Philadelphia.

Part of Florida's Largest Spring Home Show, the adoptions take place at the Expo Hall at the fairgrounds, 4800 U.S. 301 in Tampa.

It runs from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. today and Saturday and until 6 p.m. Sunday. Call 677-6925.
