A good start to learn and grow smart

Hernando County Cooperative Extension Service will have its Florida-friendly landscaping "Grow Smart" workshop from 8:30 a.m. to noon March 29 at the SNPJ Lodge, 13383 County Line Road.

The program will be presented by the Hernando County Cooperative Extension Service, Florida Yards and Neighborhoods Program, Southwest Florida Water Management District and Hernando County Utilities Department.

Participants will learn about landscape design secrets, native plants and proper landscape pest control. Demonstrations and talks will be given by Florida Yards and Neighborhoods coordinator John Korycki, multi-county agricultural agent Stacy Strickland and Brightman Logan from All Natives Nursery.

The cost is $10. Registration is required by March 23. To register, stop by the extension office at 19490 Oliver St., Brooksville, or call 754-4433. County utilities customers who prepay and attend the workshop are eligible for a $10 rebate (one per account). Call 540-4368, ext. 35139.


Time to paint the town green

Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9236 will have its annual St. Patrick's Day bash from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. March 17 at the post, 3435 Shoal Line Blvd. A corned beef and cabbage dinner will be served for $8. Music and party favors will be provided. Call 596-9236.


Feast and sing in Irish tradition

Marine Corps League Detachment 708 will host a St. Patrick's Day celebration from noon to 6 p.m. March 17 at the detachment, 8405 Sunshine Grove Road. A traditional Irish feast of corned beef and cabbage, and green beer (or another drink) will be served. Tickets are $7. DJ Richard Mohammed will provide music, including Irish songs, from noon to 3 p.m. For information, call 597-7979.

Youth to explain their fair projects

The Hernando County Fair Association will host a community meet-and-greet dinner at 6 p.m. Tuesday in the auditorium at the Hernando County Fairgrounds, 6436 S Broad St.

Youth from the Jolly Ranchers and Future Cattleman 4-H Clubs will be at the dinner to explain their projects. For reservations, call Tammy Fincher at 799-1236, Nancy Moores at 754-4433, or Joy Jackson at 796-4552.
