COUNTYWIDE

Pinellas County helicopters will drop raccoon bait laced with rabies vaccine beginning Monday. The primary treatment areas are the Hillsborough and Pasco county borders and areas north of Gulf-to-Bay Boulevard in Clearwater. Secondary treatment areas include the Weedon Island Preserve, Gandy flats, St. Petersburg-Clearwater International Airport, the county's solid waste plant and other parks south of Gulf-to-Bay. The vaccine is sealed in a polymer sachet and placed in a small square block of fish meal bait. Unless someone has a weakened immune system, neither the bait nor the vaccine is harmful to people or pets. People with weakened immune systems, especially those undergoing chemotherapy or who have HIV/AIDS, should avoid contact with the liquid vaccine contained in the bait. Pinellas County has had no reported cases of rabies since 2005.
