New Midtown shopping center draws applause

ST. PETERSBURG - A motorcycle thundered past on 34th Street S, interrupting Deputy Mayor Goliath Davis.

"Groundbreakings and ribbon cuttings are pretty much routine in Midtown, as magnified by that Harley over there," Davis said, drawing a ripple of laughter from those assembled.

The latest occasion was Tuesday's grand opening of Twin Brooks Commons Plaza, a 26,400-square-foot shopping center at 2100 34th St. S.

It is on the cusp of Midtown and on a corner that has a history of struggling.

"There are people in Midtown who have money to buy services, but they've always had to go outside Midtown to get them," Mayor Rick Baker said.

Five businesses also celebrated their grand openings Tuesday at the $8-million project: Quiznos, Wireless Toys, Nail Art, H&R Block and Check 'n Go, a financial service. A sixth, Athlete's Edge, is scheduled to open March 30.

There is space available for 18 stores. It is the second-largest shopping center in Midtown, behind Tangerine Plaza on 22nd Street S and 18th Avenue.

Davis also gave credit to city zoning official John Hixenbaugh for working toward a quality development, and he praised Susan Haskel of Haskel Realty Group for her work on tenant leases.

Twin Brooks Commons LLC and B&P Development Group are the developers. Management principals include Robert Parsons of Belleair Shore and Bill Kanatas and Thomas Matthews of Chicago.

"Hopefully, this is the kickoff for redevelopment in the area," Matthews said.
