What's hot: The monthlong federal waters ban on grouper ends Friday, but until then, divers and fishermen must work hard to find these fish in shallow state waters. Few grouper and degraded visibility, 15 feet in 35 feet, were found this week. Sheepshead are heavy on shallow ledges, and hogfish are abundant, but good-sized ones are rare.

Gear tip: Try a yellow lens mask or add a yellow lens cover to your mask. It brings out detail in low-light conditions. Only Seavision, a St. Petersburg company, manufactures the quick-to-attach covers that can be found at most area dive retailers. Tournament news: The TBSC Winter Invitational spearfishing tournament is next weekend. Late registration is Friday, and the tournament begins March 17. A portion of the proceeds will go to support divers and fishermen's rights. Visit tampa bayspearfishingclub.org or call Isaac Lathrop at 727 460-0205. Bill Hardman teaches scuba, spearfishing and free diving through Aquatic Obsessions Scuba in St. Petersburg. He can be reached at (727) 344-3483 or bill @tampa bayspearfishingclub.org
