200 homes evacuated to escape wildfire

ANAHEIM, CALIF. - A fast-moving brush fire scorched 1,000 acres of parched hillside and charred at least two homes Sunday, forcing authorities to evacuate more than 200 homes, Orange County fire officials said. No injuries have been reported. Firefighters were aided by helicopters and planes dropping water and retardant on the flames, and police went door to door to warn residents to evacuate.

Woman is shot dead at church after fight

OAKLAND, CALIF. - Horrified parishioners watched a man pull out a gun and open fire on a churchgoer as she tried to run away, fatally wounding her just before services began Sunday morning, police said. Tanya McCall, 40, of Vallejo had argued with the man in the parking lot, witnesses told police. Police had no suspect.

Second copter crash in four days kills one

HANEA, HAWAII - One person was killed and three people were seriously injured in a tour helicopter crash Sunday on Kauai, authorities said. The crash occurred about 1 p.m., shortly after the pilot heard a loud bang and lost control of the aircraft near the island's north shore, Federal Aviation Administration officials said. A tour helicopter crash on Thursday at Princeville Airport killed three passengers and the pilot.

Police question person after fire kills 4

CHICAGO - Police on Sunday were questioning "a person of interest" in connection with the fire Saturday morning that killed three men and one woman in an apartment building. The person roughly matches the description given by neighborhood residents of a woman who may have set at least three smaller fires in the area, Chicago police said. Police declined to say where they found the person of interest, only saying that the individual smelled strongly of smoke.
