The Sons of Italy, Nature Coast Lodge 2502, will host its annual St. Joseph's Day Festival on Sunday at the Hernando County Senior Citizens Club, 7925 Rhanbuoy Road. The event will begin with a Mass at 3 p.m. A free dinner will be served to all those attending from 4 to 7 p.m. Lodge members will prepare pasta Milanese, a meatless spaghetti dish that includes sauce topped with bread crumbs, cheese and seasonings. Woven breads, bread shaped in the form of a cross and shepherd's staff, cream puff pastries called "sfinge di San Giuseppe," cannoli, fresh fruits, vegetables and flowers will be sold. This is a traditional festival that dates back to the Middle Ages, when a severe drought ravaged Sicily. Residents appealed to their patron saint, St. Joseph, promising if he would end the drought, they would celebrate with a festival in his honor. For information about the celebration, call Gene at 596-9456 or Andrew at 683-3856.
