TAMPA

A Freightliner truck slammed into a vacant building just north of Ybor City after colliding Monday morning with a small sport utility vehicle, fire officials said.

The accident forced the closure of Columbus Drive at 21st Street for more than three hours.

Darnetha German, 66, of Tampa, was eastbound on Columbus about 9:30 a.m. when she ran a red light in her Suzuki SUV, Tampa Fire spokesman Capt. Bill Wade said. She hit a truck owned by Powe & Son Trucking that was driven by 39-year-old Dexter Davis of Tampa.

German was treated for minor injuries at the scene before being taken to a local hospital. Davis was not injured.

Wade said that police planned to write German a citation for running the red light.

Both vehicles hit a two-story frame commercial structure that was nearby.

Rescue crews used braces to stabilize the damaged building before sending a tow truck to remove the Freightliner, which was wedged into the building.
