Veterans' care will top agenda

TAMPA - In a nation newly awakened to the problems of its sick and injured veterans, a new organization is trying to define the needs and improve services for wartime survivors.

The Commission on the Future for America's Veterans holds its first Webcast town hall meeting from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center on the Tampa campus of the University of South Florida.

The session will be available on computers around the world, though anyone may attend in person.

The session is intended to engage the public in helping develop a long-term, strategic plan for meeting the needs of veterans decades into the future.

Webcast participants will be able to see all the material presented during the meeting and pose questions by keyboard and post comments during the meeting.

The commission was formed last year by the Veterans Coalition, a joint initiative of five major veterans organizations.

Its director, Harry Walters, was head of the Veterans Administration under President Reagan. The commissioners include former top VA officials.

The group began a series of town hall meetings around the country in January to little fanfare.

But recent criticism of conditions some wounded endure at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C., and ongoing concerns about the difficulties veterans have navigating their way to help under the Department of Veterans Affairs, have given the group's work currency.
