  • For their own good
Fifty years ago, they were screwed-up kids sent to the Florida School for Boys to be straightened out. But now they are screwed-up men, scarred by the whippings they endured. Read the story and see a video and portrait gallery.

2-piece dress fit for early wedding

Q: My daughter is getting married this summer, and I need your help. It is a morning wedding, and we are wearing short dresses. Please help with a pattern and suggest appropriate fabric. I am not a beginner; I have tailored suits many times.

A: I have selected a beautiful suit that can be worn as a two-piece dress depending on the fabric. I love Vogue 8148, sized 6-22. It has a very flattering neckline, which looks slightly dressier than a conventional tailored jacket.

You can wear this as a two-piece dress without wearing a camisole under it. I would select a very lightweight wool crepe or silk dupioni, shantung or satin. Just remember, the ruffle on the skirt must be made of a soft fabric, or it won't hang the way it should.

This week's winner

Each week, a reader wins a prize for sending in a helpful sewing hint. This week's winner is Joy Stuart of Atlanta. She will receive a collection of 100 hand-sewing needles from England. Her tip:

"When anyone in our family buys new clothes and there are extra buttons in a little plastic bag or on cardboard, I remove them and immediately sew the extra buttons on the inside bottom of the garment. No more trying to match the buttons at a later date. This sure works for me!"

You, too, could win a collection of hand-sewing needles. Send your sewing tips to Eunice Farmer, Box 31729, St. Louis, MO 63131, or info@eunicefarmerfabrics.com If she selects your tidbit for publication, you'll receive this prize.

Eunice Farmer is a nationally recognized authority on sewing. She is an author, teacher, lecturer and fashion reporter, and she owns her own fabric boutique and sewing school.
