Area star finds perfection again

Matt Ivkovic, a frequent member of the high scores list in the county, had one of the best nights of bowling in the county this season when he competed in the Suncoast Mixed League at Neffer's Bowl in Homosassa on March 9. For the second time this season and fourth time in his career, Ivkovic laced together 12 consecutive strikes to walk away with a scorecard of perfection. He achieved the same score Sept. 22 in the same league. This time, however, Ivkovic continued the string and almost tackled one of the most elusive achievements - an 800 series. Finishing with a scratch total of 794, the veteran bowler led all county competitors with his series. Only Rob Platz came somewhat close to the score with his 769 during the Monday Night Turnovers League at Manatee Lanes in Crystal River. Ivkovic competes in three leagues, two at Neffer's and one at Manatee. That participation is down from last season when he bowled in leagues in Pasco and Hernando counties in addition to his leagues at Manatee and Neffer's. Though Ivkovic has many U.S. Bowling Congress achievements, this was his first such score of 2007. He averaged a 217 during the Suncoast Mixed League last season, by far the best of his five sanctioned league averages for the yearbook season. UPCOMING TOURNEYS: Manatee's next scratch tournament is scheduled for Sunday at 11 a.m. The lane conditions will be a curveball for any entrants with the house putting down the Shark pattern used by the professionals in the PBA. The center also will host its seventh annual Spring Youth/Adult Tournament on April 1 at 11:30 a.m. The doubles tournament is a staple with youths at the center and should be just as successful as last season's event. PARKVIEW LEAGUE OPENS: The next 12-week session of the Holder Hotshots will begin April 5. A meeting for all those intending to register for the league will be at 6:30 p.m. Competition will begin April 12 at 6:50 p.m. The format for the league is: Each team must consist of four bowlers, and handicap will be assessed to all pin totals. The league will be sanctioned by the USBC, allowing all entrants to compete in USBC-sanctioned tournaments for at least a year following the league. Dues for Holder Hotshots are $10 per week. Those interested can contact league secretary Peggy Nevels at (352) 465-0757 or Parkview Lanes at (352) 489-6933.
