'I voted' sticker gets you in Mons Venus for free

Voting in the upcoming Tampa City Council runoff election could earn you a free afternoon or evening with a bunch of naked, pole-dancing ladies.

Joe Redner, owner of the Mons Venus strip club and a candidate for the District 1 at-large City Council race, is offering to waive the club's $20 cover charge for anyone who shows up with an "I voted" sticker. The pitch applies to early voters starting Monday and those who show up on the March 27 runoff date.

Redner said it's his way of trying to improve on the dismal turnout of less than 16 percent during the initial March 7 City Council election. He faces incumbent Gwen Miller in the runoff after both emerged tops in a six-candidate field March 7 but neither won more than 50 percent of the vote. A north Tampa district runoff is also on the ballot.

After campaigning little in the first election, Redner said he is working hard to win his first political race in six tries. And he said he keeps hearing from potential voters that they didn't realize there was a City Council election, let alone a runoff.

"I don't think it's going to help me personally," Redner said of his offer. "I think it's going to help the election."

A spokesman for the state Division of Elections said there's nothing illegal about Redner's free admissions pledge.

Is he trying to bring people in to see his strippers, or vote? I had guys in Mexico haul me into a strip club because the women were ugly they had to make money some how.

Just because he does that does not mean people have to mark the voting cards. What about absentee ballots? He going to send them in the mail probably not.

I feel like I live in the dumbest city in America.

my vast experience with men tells me, this will no doubt be the biggest voting turnout inrecorded history...way to go Joe

As the late Richard Jeni used to say, "Tampa: the land of strip clubs and churches." It could only happen here.

I would hope that the citizens of Tampa would sieze this opportunity to vote. Anyone I know who has children and has even a little morals would not want their city run by someone who has no value for the integrity of man and women. Look ahead!

Heck, why not Redner? Sure, he's no moral compass for our youth, but he's consistent on the issues. Maybe it's time to give him his shot at reeling in big government.

This is sooooooooo Tampa.

True testament to what a circus our local election process has become! Implement serious campaign reform!!! Limit the overdone ads, phone calls, signs, infighting, and other childish ploys for attention, and stick to the issues!!!.

Well that's a pretty novel way to get voter turnout. Not exactly a strategy that's laid out in the Rep/Dem GOTV handbooks, but probably more successful.
