Players of the week

Baseball

Justin Balk, Ridgewood

The senior outfielder's ability to get on base and his speed make him arguably the county's top leadoff hitter. In three wins last week, Balk was 6-for-13, stole three bases, drove in three runs, hit a home run and scored four runs. He also came on to earn the save against Zephyrhills with two innings of relief work.

Softball

Devin Fellman, Gulf

The Bucs' rock behind the plate hasn't missed a game in three seasons. Fellman recently snapped out of a funk after a talk with Gulf coach Rick Hohenthaner. In her past three games, she has gone 8-for-10 with two doubles, a triple and seven RBIs. Her slugging percentage is 1.333.

"Whether what I told her had any influence, I'm not going to take credit," Hohenthaner said. "She just learned she could relax and by relaxing good things can happen."

Boys tennis

Sean Little, Ridgewood

Little scored two crucial points in a 4-3 win over River Ridge, keeping the Rams undefeated. The senior won at No. 1 singles 6-3, 6-1 and combined at No. 1 doubles with Kevin Dejarnette for a come-from-behind 8-5 win in the final match to clinch the victory. Rams coach Mike Bua said Little played consistent tennis, winning a lot of pressure points.

Girls track

Chelsea Alicea, Ridgewood

One of the Rams' top runners, Alicea was on four first-place relays at last week's Suncoast Relays and runs a mean anchor leg on the 4x400 and 4x800.

"You wouldn't want anybody else but her out there," coach Sue Vien said. "Nothing will stop her."

Boys track

Michael Kern, Ridgewood

Ridgewood dominated the field events at the Suncoast Relays, and Kern did his part to ensure that continued on the track. Running the leadoff leg on the 4x400 and 4x800, Kern helped the Rams to wins in each and the overall team title.
