WASHINGTON - A major manufacturer of dog and cat food sold under Wal-Mart, Safeway, Kroger and other store brands recalled 60-million containers of wet pet food Friday after reports of kidney failure and deaths.

An unknown number of cats and dogs suffered kidney failure and about 10 died after eating the affected food, Menu Foods said in announcing the recall.

The recall covers "cuts and gravy" style food, which consists of chunks of meat in gravy, sold in cans and small foil pouches between Dec. 3 and March 6.

The food was sold by stores operated by Kroger, Safeway, Wal-Mart and PetSmart, among others, said Paul Henderson, the company's president and chief executive officer.

Menu Foods did not provide a full list of brand names and lot numbers recalled, saying they would be posted on its Web site - www.menufoods.com/recall - early today. Consumers can call 1-866-463-6738.

The company said it manufactures for 17 of the top 20 North American retailers. It is also a contract manufacturer for Procter & Gamble.

P&G announced the recall of 3-, 5.5-, 6- and 13.2-ounce canned and 3- and 5.3-ounce foil pouch cat and dog wet food products sold under the Iams and Eukanuba brands. The products bear code dates 6339 through 7073 followed by plant code 4197.

I have been feeding my dog table food and mixing it with one of the "better brands" of dog food in a packet. From now on I will be giving her only home cooked food. My sympathy to all who have lost their best friends.

So far, the website for recall info on pet Menu Food does not respond with specifics beyond brand name.

Companies need to provide a source for "one complete" list of all the recalled food and companies.

I do not have pets at this time, but feel so badly to hear what is happening. Dry food was not included in this recall, maybe put your own gravy on it, or warm broth? My thoughts are with you.

My rottweiler has had chronic diarrhea for five days, constant scratching, and depression. I've returned the food to the retailer (Publix brand can)for a refund and have contacted the manufacturer of this product. They told me they will contact me

Steve & Leigh, I am so very sorry to hear about your losses. I hope you see legal action and are successful.

It actually takes less time to make people food into pet food than you might think. If you cook for yourself, your can often cook for them too--even ahead of time.

Try feeding Purina. This brand has not been mentioned in the recall and it is what I feed my animals.

We have lost 3 cats in the last 6 months to mysterious kidney ailments. All were on this cat food. Vet bills in the 1000's. Where do I sign up for the class action lawsuit?
by E.G. 03/17/07 10:23 AM
Wow - That makes me glad that I switched away from Iams last year. They charge so much extra money - and look what happens.
