ISLAMABAD, PAKISTAN

Police battled protesters and stormed a television news channel Friday as the ouster of the top judge pushed Pakistan toward a crisis that could threaten President Gen. Pervez Musharraf's hold on power. A former president was among dozens detained as demonstrators accused the military of riding roughshod over democratic institutions. Musharraf suspended Supreme Court chief justice Iftikhar Mohammed Chaudhry a week ago, saying he had somehow abused his authority.

Israel complains about coalition

Israeli leaders criticized the new Palestinian unity government Friday, charging that the coalition of hard-line Hamas and the more moderate Fatah did not meet international conditions, including recognizing the Jewish state's right to exist.

The Palestinian unity deal instead refers vaguely to "respect" for agreements and affirms the Palestinians' right to resist and "defend themselves against any Israeli aggression." The new government, formed after months of stormy negotiations, is slated to be approved by Parliament today.
