Nightstand

"If I'm the only one standing, it's fine, but I won't be bullied by hateful people," Largo Mayor Pat Gerard said of her support for Steve Stanton, the city manager preparing for gender-reassignment surgery. Gerard is the first woman to serve as Largo's mayor. What is on your nightstand? And You Know You Should Be Glad by Bob Greene and The Audacity of Hope by Barack Obama. They're both great. I highly recommend Barack Obama's book. He points out that politicians are not serving well right now by following the party line. Polarization is occurring. It's really disturbing. Is there a particular author you read in times of high stress? H. Emilie Cady and Lessons in Truth. Cady is always good to read. And, when I have time for pleasure reading, I read Joyce Carol Oates. I recently read Blonde, and the way she portrayed Marilyn Monroe was terrific. Piper Jones Castillo, Times staff writer
