35 years later and still no equal rights In a recent poll in New Jersey, 72 percent of respondents said the United States has an Equal Rights Amendment that forbids discrimination on the basis of gender. Well, no. Although Thursday is the 35th anniversary of the amendment's passage by Congress, it remains three states short of ratification, and its legal status is in dispute. Florida is one of 15 states that have not approved it; bills have already been introduced for this year's legislative session.
