TAMPA - A domestic violence incident between a husband and wife Friday evening turned deadly, Hillsborough County sheriff's officials said, when the husband beat to death a neighbor providing shelter to his wife.

Authorities said Christsandra Gordon fled her home in the Harbour Walk & Sandstone Apartments on Webb Road in Town 'N Country after a fight with her husband, Patrick Jasper Crawford. She arrived at another apartment in the complex where her friend George Varian, 59, lived.

Crawford, 34, arrived at Varian's apartment sometime later, sheriff's spokeswoman Debbie Carter said. He argued with his wife and began hitting her.

When Varian tried to intervene, Crawford beat him severely with a large candlestick, Carter said. He then tied up his wife and placed her in a closet.

Gordon, 37, eventually freed herself, escaped the apartment and called 911 from a neighbor's apartment, Carter said.

Crawford found Gordon there and brought her back to Varian's apartment, then fled to his own. Sheriff's deputies found him there and arrested him.

Varian, who was hospitalized at St. Joseph's Hospital, died from his injuries about noon Sunday, Carter said.

Crawford remained at Orient Road Jail without bail Sunday evening on two counts of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon.

He had not received any homicide-related charges late Sunday, but Carter said additional charges were pending:

Patrick Crawford was arrested 4 times-and 'they' let him loose to continue to abuse his GILFRIEND-and then MURDER my brother...What is going on in the city of Tampa that the police have no power? This borders on criminal neglegence

Courtney, I agree that they may have deserved each other, but my brother did not deserve the treatment he received from the crazed idiot that had been arrested...4 times!!!! Why wasn't that guy in jail?

These types of cases are sad to see. But on the side of the males I knoe several women that beat their husbands or boyfriends not the other way around. Shame on anyone that raises a hand to another in that manner!

Why would this women put another person in danger. She should have called 911, but instead she brought an ANGRY man to an innocent person ( friend )to take out his frustrations on.

it is a shame that the gentleman that was killed in this situation did not have a gun. Or he could have been like so many other people and just not answered the door.It is a shame when someone tries to help and he is now a statistic.

This is his 4th arrest this year!!!! Um, hello....can you say problem?! These are the crimes that should be an eye for an eye. Although the wife, STUPID!!! How many times do you need to be beat up?! They probably deserve one another!

Beverly - thanks for adding the voice of ignorant sexism, and for displaying the abject stupidity needed to propogate a sterotype. Was the gentleman who gave his life to protect the victim a "caveman" too?

Moronic wife beater...atleast now in jail he will get his turn to be the beaten wife.
by Beverly 03/19/07 07:19 AM
What is wrong with males these days? This caveman mentality has got to stop and as long as women put up with it, it will only get worse.
