Fifty years ago, they were screwed-up kids sent to the Florida School for Boys to be straightened out. But now they are screwed-up men, scarred by the whippings they endured. Read the story and see a video and portrait gallery.

Obama comes to Tampa

Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama will be raising money in Tampa April 15, both at a high-dollar fundraiser and at a $25-per-person reception.

The locations are not yet set, and that is only one of many Florida campaign stops for the Illinois senator in the coming weeks .

One of his fundraising hosts in Jacksonville late this month is former gubernatorial candidate Steve Pajcic.

New think tank unveils Web site

A new Florida think tank, CIVIC, has unveiled www. CIVICconcern.org, an interactive Web site for promoting "innovative, centrist ideas and accessible political information."

The organization is structured as a nonpartisan nonprofit, but appears to lean moderate-Democrat.

"One-sided government always leaves somebody on the outside looking in. In Florida, that somebody has been Florida's families, workers and children," said Bernie Campbell, CIVIC spokesperson who is also a prominent Democratic consultant based in Tampa.

The first essay posted on the Web site bashes the Legislature's efforts to lower property insurance rates.

"Essentially, the Legislature has gambled that Florida won't be hit by too many hurricanes before they can build up the CAT Fund. Who pays off that $30-billion bet if they're wrong? Florida property owners," the essay states.

I just founf out that the Jacksonville event will only be an "event" for the high donors. We thought there'd be two like Tampa is having. Needless to say, many of us are VERY upset with his campaign for this choice.

Excellent, a chance to see and hear Barack Obama speak on the issues. The time is short, maybe as early as Jan 29th, for Floridians to make their voices heard. By Jan '08 a clear path will have been established on our future role in Iraq. Go Obama!

We are so excited to host Barack Obama in the Tampa Bay area! Obama unites our country and offers a true alternative to politics as usual. His campaign strives to bring the power back to the people and reduce the influence of special interest groups.

I can't wait to hear Senator Obama in person. I am ready for a change in Washington. Obama speaks to my generation. We want more than war and greed. We want hope.
