Free food available for Outreach participants

Compassion Food Outreach will distribute food at 8 a.m. Saturday at Grace World Outreach Church, 20366 Cortez Blvd.

1K, 5K, 10K runs take registrations

The 28th annual Red Mule Runners Flatlanders Challenge will be April 7, starting in front of the Hernando County Courthouse, 20 N Main St.

The 5K and 10K runs will begin at 8 a.m. A 1K Kids Run will be at 10 a.m.

The cost to enter the 5K and 10K races is $20 in advance and $25 on race day; T-shirts will be guaranteed to all preregistered runners. The cost for the 1K Kids Run is $5.

May 26 races take registrations

A Spring Lake 5K Run and 2-Mile Fun Walk/Run will be May 26 at the Arc Nature Coast, 5283 Neff Lake Road, east of Brooksville. Registration will begin at 7 a.m. and the race will start at 8 a.m.

The cost is $25 for the 5K and $20 for the fun walk/run. T-shirts will be guaranteed to those who register by May 23. Prizes will be awarded for first through third place in various age groups. There will also be a post-race food fest.

Salsa your way into helping cause

A Salsa Lovers Dance to raise funds for the "Friends of the Children" summer camp scholarships will be at 8 p.m. Saturday at the Jerome Brown Community Center, 99 Jerome Brown Place, off Darby Lane.

DJ Naldin Raphael Fierre will provide music, including salsa, bachata, cha-cha and merengue.

The cost is $8 per person, $12 per couple or $75 for a table of 10. Reservations for tables must be made before 5 p.m. Friday.

Golfers, sponsors needed for tourney

Golfers and sponsors are needed for the Jim Monk Eighth Annual Scholarship Golf Tournament, which will be April 14 at Rivard Golf and Country Club, 18001 Rivard Blvd., off Broad Street, south of Spring Hill Drive.

Hole sponsorships are $50. The cost to enter the tournament is $50 per person, which includes a buffet lunch catered by Brian's Place Restaurant and Gourmet Deli.

The tournament will have a shotgun start at 8 a.m. This is a four-person scramble with prizes awarded to the top three teams. There will also be prizes for closest to the pin on Par 3 holes and a prize for the longest drive. There will also be numerous door prizes.

The Jim Monk Scholarship is a nonprofit corporation. All donations are tax deductible. All proceeds go to scholarships for Hernando County high school seniors.

BROOKSVILLE/DADE CITY

Master Gardener training course offered

A Master Gardener program will be 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursdays, May 17-Aug. 16, alternating between the Hernando County Cooperative Extension Service at 19490 Oliver St., Brooksville, and the Pasco County Cooperative Extension Service, 36702 State Road 52, Dade City.

Those interested in taking the course must attend these precourse meetings:

- 10 a.m. Thursday and 2 p.m. April 5 at the Hernando extension office.

There is no cost for the precourse meeting. The training course is $110.

The course covers basic botany and entomology, plant propagation, pruning, how to fertilize, how to grow vegetables, fruits and ornamentals, landscape design, plant pest problems and more.

Individuals accepted into the program must agree to give a minimum of 75 hours of volunteer work and receive a minimum of eight hours of continuing education annually to remain certified as a Florida Master Gardener.

Church ham dinner coming up Saturday

The Ladies Aide of Nobleton Church will host a ham and beans supper from 4 to 6 p.m. Saturday in the fellowship hall, 29071 Sentinel St.

Hospice ceremony comforts the bereaved

Hernando-Pasco Hospice will host two "A Time for Remembrance" ceremonies at 2 and 6 p.m. March 28 at its West Hernando campus, 12260 Cortez Blvd.

These are free community ceremonies, each about 45 minutes. The programs are for anyone who has experienced the death of a loved one. Hospice and non-hospice survivors are encouraged to attend.

Hospice chaplains will conduct the ceremonies, which will include music, readings and a time for quiet reflection. Bereavement counselors will be on hand to provide comfort and support. For information, call toll-free 1-800-486-8784.

Rotary to hold open house at restaurant

The Rotary Club of Spring Hill Central will host an open house from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. March 29 at Johnny Carino's Italian Restaurant, 12070 Cortez Blvd.

There will be a social hour followed by a brief program and introduction of new members.

Community workshop Thursday at golf club

Hernando Progress will present the biannual Hernando County Community Summit Workshop from 8:15 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Thursday at Silverthorn Country Club, 4550 Golf Club Lane.

Issues to be discussed include transportation, growth management, business development, education and safety and security.

The summit is an effort that has been under way for several years to develop a blueprint for the future that works with the county's Comprehensive Plan. The purpose is to build a consensus among the business community, environmental groups, homeowners' associations and county government about the quality of life in Hernando County.

The community summit is a collaborative effort among Hernando Progress, the Hernando County Commission, the city of Brooksville and the Hernando County School Board. Elected officials are expected to attend and participate in the discussions.

String quartet concert scheduled March 26

Academia Hernando will host a classical music performance with the Musical Reflections string quartet from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. March 26 at Grace Presbyterian Church, 8375 Spring Hill Drive.

The concert will include classical numbers from composers such as Brahms, Mozart, Dvorak and Beethoven.

Admission is free for those who subscribe to the Academia Hernando lecture series. The cost is $10 for all others, payable at the door.

Marine safety group to hold fundraisers

The Hernando Beach Marine Safety Support Group will have a yard sale starting at 8 a.m. Saturday at the Coast Guard Auxiliary, 4340 Calienta St.

This is a nonprofit group that encourages boating safety and supports the Coast Guard Auxiliary, as well as other national, state and local government units.

The Marine Safety Support Group is also planning a chicken barbecue at 3 p.m. April 21. Dinners will be $8 each.

Sign up by April 2 for vendor spaces at fair

Vendor spaces are available for the Hernando County Fair and Youth Livestock Show, which will be April 20-29 at the Hernando County Fairgrounds, 6436 S Broad St.

A limited number of indoor and outdoor spaces are available. Completed applications must be received by the fairgrounds office no later than April 2, and must include a picture of the booth or display.
