Tommy Saltsman is one of five solid players for the Lecanto boys, who recently beat district power Crystal River.

Sammie Hall can tell when her players are getting a little too tense.

The first-year Lecanto girls coach knows most of the players from her days coaching at the middle school. So all it takes is a quick inside joke and they are loose again.

It's one reason the team is undefeated this season. Another is depth. The Panthers have a strong top seven in Sonia Shah, Sasha Rodriguez, Shivani Parikh, Lakshmi Ram, Aarthi Ram, Veronica Adams and Audrey Kelly.

"It's a great group of girls," Hall said. "They communicate with each other. They support each other."

LECANTO BOYS: The boys also are undefeated and posted a win against top district team Crystal River. The county's No. 1 player, Brian deMontfort won his match, but the Panthers' depth paid off.

"We are very deep," coach Jack Hall said. "We don't have the dominant player in the county, but we have a solid No. 1 all the way through five."

The Panthers are led by Tommy Saltsman, Joe Tamposi, Yogesh Gandhi, Patrick Simon and Nikesh Shah.

DISTRICTS MOVED: Both the girls and boys Class 2A, District 5 tournaments will be held at Crystal River on April 16. Originally the boys tournament was to be held at Lecanto.
