TAMPA - A four-car collision killed a 45-year-old Tampa man Sunday night on busy Interstate 4, the Florida Highway Patrol reported Tuesday.

Luis O. Velez, 45, of 4815 Centerbrook Court died after the crash at I-4 near Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, troopers said.

The crash happened at 9:55 p.m., when 22-year-old Joseph P. Bowden of Lakeland, westbound in a Ford Mustang, failed to slow for traffic, crashing into the back of Velez's car and starting a chain reaction of accidents, troopers said.

Bowden, who was not wearing a seat belt, had minor injuries, troopers said. Velez, who was wearing a seat belt, died at the scene of the crash. The driver of the third car, 41-year-old Suzan P. Claycomb of Tampa, went to Tampa General Hospital with minor injuries.

The fourth driver, Maria E. Berumen, 30, of Pinellas Park was not hurt, troopers said.

No charges have been filed, said Trooper Larry Coggins.
