Talent shines at Midtown show

A standing-room-only crowd watched the debut of a youth talent showcase Saturday night at Wildwood Recreation Center, and it appears the event worked well enough to have a future. "We're definitely going to make it annually," said Marci Reedy, who directs the Wildwood teen program. "We set up for 200 and it was standing room only by the end of the night," said Reedy, who said the crowd reached more than 300 during the three-hour show. Midtown Idol Showcase was the brainchild of Sandra Harrell. The Palmetto Park resident worked on putting together the show for a year, enlisting officials and friends to help make the event happen. Harrell was still enjoying the afterglow early this week while trying to thank everyone who helped. "I hope we reached out to the other youth to let them know we do have talent in St. Pete, so each year it should grow better and better," Harrell said. She had special thanks for friends at work, recreation leaders, Donza Drummond of WRXB-AM 1590 and Eric Green of Everyone's Youth United. About 40 youngsters took part, singing and dancing in about 20 acts. "Awesome," said Brenda Flournoy, who attended. She said she is hoping to recruit a singing 9-year-old boy for a musical event at her church, Dominion Worship Center. Harrell said she is ready to do it again. "Miss Marci asked me to work with her next year," Harrell said. She said the show will be held "around about the same time" in mid March.
