Calvary Christian's Jose "Emman" Crescimbeni, the Times' 2005 swimmer of the year, will swim in the FINA World Aquatics Championships in Melbourne, Australia, this week.
The long-course meet 50 meters is held every odd year and features events in all five swimming disciplines.
Crescimbeni, who is on the Peruvian national team, is swimming in the 50, 100 and 200 fly. He hopes to swim the 200 fly in an Olympic qualifying standard time of two minutes, .01 seconds. He swam the event in 2:03 last year.
"This meet is a big deal for Jose," said Clearwater Aquatics Team coach Mike Yearwood, who trains Crescimbeni in the offseason. "I believe he is the only 16-year-old in the country who is competing."
FAST TIMES: Lakewood's Ali Crabb was the dominant distance runner at last week's West Coast Invitational. The senior battled windy conditions to win the 1,600 meters in 5:17 and the 3,200 in 11:21. Both times are the best in the county this season.
CHECK IT OUT: One of the best public school baseball matchups takes place tonight when Dunedin (9-3) plays at Seminole (11-2). Both teams are ranked in the top three in Times Super Seven poll. (Seminole is No. 2 and Dunedin No. 3).
STATS: The Times will run baseball statistics on Saturday. Stats can be faxed to 445-4119 or e-mailed to putnam@sptimes.com Baseball coaches also can call Bob Putnam at 445-4169 and leave stats on voicemail.
