Bikers take to the street for Dice Run

COUNTYWIDE

ABATE of Florida, Freedom Chapter, invites bikers to participate in a March Madness Dice Run on March 31. Sign-ups start at 11 a.m. at VFW Post 8173, 1681 E Jefferson St., Brooksville, with the last bike out at noon.

Stops will include IRRU Social Club in Floral City, Tail Gaters in Spring Hill, VFW Post 9236 in Hernando Beach and end at Bayport Inn in Weeki Wachee. The last bike should be in at 5 p.m.

The cost is $5 per score card or $10 for three cards.

ABATE American Bikers Aiming Towards Education is a nonprofit organization of motorcycle enthusiasts who promote safety, training and political awareness. This is not a club. Visit the Web site at abateflorida.com/freedom.

Florida-friendly gardening programs

The Hernando County Cooperative Extension Service will offer the following Florida-friendly gardening programs at the Spring Hill satellite office at 7479 Forest Oaks Blvd., in the West Side Government Center:

- Mulches for Your Landscape, April 3.

- Tired of Turf? We've Got You Covered, April 10.

- Gopher Tortoise: A Species of Special Concern, April 17.

- Help Your Landscape Beat the Heat!, April 24.

All programs are free and start at 10 a.m. Registration is not required, but seating will be limited.

The following programs will be offered at the Extension Service office at 19490 Oliver St., Brooksville:

- Rain Barrel Workshop, 10 a.m. April 11. The cost is $25, which includes a completed rain barrel to take home. Preregistration is required.

- What's Bugging Your Lawn?, 10 a.m. April 21. Registration is required.

Community services agency board to meet

Mid-Florida Community Services Inc., will conduct a governing board meeting at 10 a.m. April 4 at the facility at 820 Kennedy Blvd.

Win rodeo tickets in kids' writing contest

The Hernando County Fair Association invites elementary-age children to participate in a contest to win tickets to the AutoWay IPRA Championship Rodeo at the upcoming Hernando County Fair and Youth Livestock Show.

Those interested are to write a paragraph about "What the American Flag Means to Me."

Thirty winners will be selected to win a rodeo ticket and will be able to participate in a special national anthem presentation at the rodeo on April 20, 21 or 22.

Entries must be received no later than April 13 and can be dropped off at the office at the Hernando County Fairgrounds, 6436 S Broad St.; mailed to the Hernando County Fair Rodeo Committee, P.O. Box 10456, Brooksville, FL 34603; or e-mailed to info@hernandocountyfair.com

Bowl-a-thon to benefit kids set for April 7

Bowlers are needed for the Big Brothers Big Sisters "Bowl for Kids' Sake" bowl-a-thon, which will be April 7 at Mariner Lanes, 3544 Mariner Blvd.

There is no cost to register. Teams of five bowlers are asked to raise at least $375; individual bowlers are asked to raise at least $75.

On event day, bowlers are asked to check in at 12:30 p.m. and bowling will begin at 1.

Let your voice be heard for children

The Guardian ad Litem Program is in need of volunteers to speak on behalf of abused and neglected children in Hernando County involved in Dependency Court proceedings.

Volunteers represent the children's best interest to the judge. Volunteering typically requires just a few hours a week; all time and monetary donations are tax-deductible.

Help needed for fun fest at Brown center

Sponsors and participants are needed for the Week of the Young Child Fun Festival, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 14 at the Jerome Brown Community Center, 99 Jerome Brown Place, Brooksville.

Those interested may volunteer or sponsor an event, such as the moon walk, pony rides or a hands-on activity.

The free annual event offers family entertainment and activities, and also promotes the need for quality child care and education. For information, call Sheila Chambers at 754-5068, ext. 210.

Volunteers needed for Arc competitions

The Arc Nature Coast POSSE equestrian program students will participate in a prequalifying show April 6-7 and the Special Olympics competitions May 18-19 at the state fairgrounds in Tampa.

Arc Nature Coast is a nonprofit organization that provides supports and services to developmentally disabled Hernando County residents and their families.
