TAMPA - A man suspected of starting a fire on the roof of the Towers of Channelside was arrested Wednesday in Franklin County and will be brought back to Tampa.

Thomas LaPlante, 27, is accused of breaking into one of the two condominium towers at 1211 E Cumberland Ave., which are under construction, climbing to the top floor and using propane cylinders to start a fire on March 14, Tampa Fire Rescue spokesman Capt. Bill Wade said. The fire did minor damage and nobody was injured.

Witnesses identified LaPlante, and officials issued an arrest warrant Monday. An official from Franklin County called the Tampa Fire Marshals Office on Wednesday and said LaPlante had been arrested.

Before Wednesday, LaPlante had been arrested about five times in Florida, with charges including larceny, petit theft, burglary, trespassing and obstructing firefighters.
