Three removed from prison

The warden and two top assistants at Hendry Correctional Institution were removed from their posts Wednesday by prisons boss Jim McDonough after a prisoner was allegedly beaten and choked by four guards last week. Warden Carol Starling, 53, and assistant warden Jim Tridico, 62, were removed pending reassignment and Col. William Avant was fired.


Ex-prisoner suing county, police

A man wrongly imprisoned for 26 years for a series of South Florida rapes in the 1970s filed a civil right suit Wednesday against Miami-Dade County and police, accusing them of falsifying records . Luis Diaz Martinez, 69, was released in March 2005, after DNA evidence excluded him as the attacker in two of the rapes.


Dead panther found on I-4

A male panther was found dead on Interstate 4 near Walt Disney World on Wednesday, officials said. At least 11 panthers were killed by cars in the state in 2006 - a record, according to wildlife officials.
