Pasco's Chasco Fiesta packs 11 days of fun

Chasco Fiesta, the largest annual event in west Pasco County, kicks off today in New Port Richey's Sims Park and continues through April 1 with parades, free nightly entertainment, a flea market, historical talks, a carnival, kayak races, food vendors and a large Native American Festival at the center of the entire 11-day celebration. Tonight's Native American Festival concert headliner is award-winning Southern Paiute-Scottish violinist Arvel Bird, with One Nation and the Ani Kituhwa Cherokee Dance Troupe. The show starts at 7 p.m. in the Sims Park amphitheater. Native American Festival booths are open from midmorning to 10 p.m. today and Monday through March 29; 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. Fridays; 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. Saturdays; and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sundays. A Chasco highlight is the giant street parade at 1 p.m. Saturday along Grand Boulevard and Main Street. The fiesta boat parade along the Pithlachascotee River (adjacent to Sims Park downtown) is at 1 p.m. March 31 from Millers Bayou (east of the U.S. 19 bridge) to the bridge in New Port Richey. The entertainment lineup is Rhythm & Bluesmasters, 6 to 11 p.m. Friday; Rock 'n Roll Tribute Day, 4 to 11 p.m. Saturday; Talent Showcase, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, Magical Night of Disney, 5:30 to 9 p.m.; bluegrass, 6 to 10 p.m. Monday; the Dan McMillion Jazz Orchestra, 6 to 10 p.m. Tuesday; Noche Latina, 6 to 10 p.m. Wednesday; True Oldies with Tommy Mara and the Legends of Doo Wop and Joey Dee and the Starliters, 6 to 11 p.m. March 29; contemporary Christian family night, 6 to 11 p.m. March 30; country concert with Rodney Atkins and Darryl Worley ($15 advance, $20 at the gate), 5:45 p.m. March 31; and the concert band showcase, 2 to 5 p.m. April 1.
