Electric co-op honored for its innovation

ELECTRIC CO-OP HONORED FOR ITS INNOVATION

Sumter Electric Cooperative Inc. SECO on Thursday received a "Cooperative Innovators Award" from the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association. SECO was honored for its "Enterprise Geospatial Technologies" product, which it developed with General Electric to provide near real-time access to information for customers. SECO has more than 140,000 customers in seven area counties, including east Citrus. The award was presented at the Tech Advantage 2007 Conference & Expo in Las Vegas.

Is it fries or chips? Author will tell you

Claudine Dervaes, author and publisher of The U.K. to U.S.A. Dictionary, will present workshops from 2 to 3 p.m. April 2 at the Lakes Region Library in Inverness and April 3 at the Central Ridge Library in Beverly Hills. She will discuss the great places to visit and fun things to do when traveling through parts of the United Kingdom, and also explain some of the terms and expressions that differ in British English vs. American English (petrol for gas, bonnet for hood, boot for trunk, chips for french fries, and so on). Dervaes has more than 30 years' experience in the travel industry; she will be available for book signing after the presentations.

VA task force wants comments

U.S. Secretary of Veterans Affairs Jim Nicholson is leading a new interagency task force examining the processes for combat veterans seeking services and benefits from the Department of Veterans Affairs and other federal agencies. Check out the Web page - www.va.gov/taskforce - if you wish to share ideas and experiences. People can also send e-mail to the task force at TFHeroes@va.gov or fax comments to (202) 273-9599. The Web page allows active duty service members, veterans, family members and others to comment directly to the task force on the accessibility, timeliness and delivery of services. Comments will be studied by the task force, used in the panel's evaluation of gaps in service and form the basis of recommended solutions, according to a VA news release.

Reminder: Sirens are only a test

There will be a test of the county's old and new emergency siren systems in west Citrus at noon today. There also will be tests on March 30 and April 6.
