LHP J.P. Howell, making his case for the fifth starter spot, allowed one run on four hits over five innings. He escaped a two-out, fourth-inning jam with the tying run at the plate by striking out Reds 3B Enrique Cruz. Howell also snared a hard comebacker off the bat of Josh Hamilton that left Howell on his backside. "I'm just happy I'm still alive," Howell said.
Should teams be bringing minor-league pitchers into exhibition games this late in the spring? The Reds tested that question with Wes Wilkerson, whose wildness in an all-but-over game almost prompted a bench-clearing brawl in the eighth inning. "We were just hoping he could find the catcher," Reds pitching coach Dick Pole said of Wilkerson.
