On paper, they're productive poo bears

BEIJING - China is considering an act of recycling that will require true conviction to the cause.

Researchers at a giant panda reserve in southern China are looking for paper mills to process their surplus of fiber-rich panda excrement into high-quality paper.

Chengdu Giant Panda Breeding Base is in talks with mills on how to turn the droppings of its pandas into office and wrapping paper, said researcher Liao Jun. They hope to have products available next year.

"We are not interested in doing this for the profits but to recycle waste," said Liao. "We can use the paper ourselves and also we can sell whatever is left over."

Liao said he was unsure how much paper could be produced from the hundred of pounds of droppings the center produces each day. But he likes its chances on the market.

"People won't find it gross at all," Liao said. "They probably won't even be able to tell it's from panda poop."
