United Way names winners, new officers

CITRUS HILLS Publix has won the United Way of Citrus County's inaugural Spirit of the Community Award. Others recognized during United Way's annual meeting and luncheon Tuesday included the small business category winner, Weber Glass; and the up-and-coming small business winner, Nature Coast Bank. The media support award went to the Citrus County Chronicle. The 2006-07 campaign chairwoman, Tax Collector Janice Warren, announced that $615,119.73 was raised. New officers are Paul Mellini, president; Jerry DeLoach, treasurer; Richard Bradtmuller, secretary; and Sandra "Sam" Himmel, campaign chairwoman for 2007-08. HOMOSASSA Try a treat from supersized grill This is not your ordinary backyard grill. Grill masters of the Johnsonville Big Taste Grill will serve Johnsonville bratwurst ($2) from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. today at Publix, 3942 S Suncoast Blvd. (U.S. 19). Proceeds benefit the United Way. The Johnsonville Big Taste Grill weighs more than 53,000 pounds and measures 65 feet. COUNTYWIDE Got questions for sheriff? Call today Sheriff Jeff Dawsy will appear on Sheriff's 10-43, the law enforcement agency's weekly television show, at 7:30 p.m. today on WYKE TV-Ch. 47 (channel 16 on Bright House and channel 97 on Adelphia.) The live show features a call-in format where viewers can pose questions to Dawsy by calling 795-4919 during the broadcast. INVERNESS Food pantry needs donations now Citrus United Basket is in immediate need of nonperishable food donations: canned meats and vegetables, soups, canned meals, tuna, pasta, rice, cereal, peanut butter and jelly, Jell-O, pudding, and more. CUB provides food and other things to needy Citrus County residents once a month. Tax-deductible donations can be dropped off from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays at the CUB office, 103 Mills St. Call 344-2242. Speedboats zip by Saturday, Sunday The Thunder in the Hills speedboat races will be Saturday and Sunday at Lake Henderson. Watch from the shorelines of the two parks; admission is free. Bring lawn chairs. Racing begins at 10 a.m. and continues until 5 p.m. Other activities include a recreational vehicle show, along with food and beverages sold by the Rotarians. Children's games include a fun house, slides and a rock-climbing wall. Proceeds go to local charities.
