Coach: We're getting in
Despite another frustrating loss, Tortorella guarantees his team will make the playoffs.

TAMPA - The Lightning is down, no doubt about it.
You could see it in their faces, you could hear it in their voices after a 5-2 loss to the Panthers on Tuesday night at the St. Pete Times Forum.
Players spoke of "anger" and "frustration" and what the heck it will take to stop the slow, torturous erosion of their playoff position.
But coach John Tortorella said his team was anything but out. In fact, he guaranteed Tampa Bay will make the playoffs.
"We're getting in. We are going to get in," he said. "We're going around the block is the best way to put it. But we're going to get in. You can write that. It is a guarantee."
Tortorella is kind of working without a net on this one.
The Lightning (41-32-4), losers of two straight and five of seven, is, with 86 points, tied with the Canadiens for seventh in the East, just two points ahead of the Hurricanes, Islanders and Maple Leafs, who are tied for ninth and out of the playoffs.
But talk about a top-to-bottom race: Tampa Bay remained just two points behind the Thrashers for first place in the Southeast.
Defenseman Dan Boyle, who for weeks has talked about catching Atlanta, said that with the regular season down to five games and the pressure mounting, perhaps it is time to forget about whom the Lightning is chasing and who is pursuing.
"We shouldn't focus on Atlanta or even making the playoffs," he said. "We just need to focus on winning a hockey game."
This one was close to the end as the Panthers scored two empty-net goals in the final minute, and even right wing Marty St. Louis said, "We played a lot better than the result."
So what happened?
A three-goal second by Florida that wiped out a 1-0 Lightning lead gained on Brad Richards' 25th goal 4:54 into the period and got goaltender Marc Denis pulled for the second straight game.
Denis' start was a surprise given his poor effort in Saturday's loss to the Senators. But his 3-2-1 record against Florida with a 1.82 goals-against average and .940 save percentage was a recommendation.
Stephen Weiss tied the score at 9:55 on a five-on-three power-play, and Nathan Horton's sketchy goal from an extreme angle made it 2-1 three minutes later.
After Olli Jokinen scored on a breakaway with 59 seconds left on a soft backhander between Denis' legs while being harassed from behind by defenseman Shane O'Brien, Johan Holmqvist started the third.
The Lightning cut its deficit to one with Filip Kuba's 13th goal, short-handed, 9:58 into the period. But many other chances were missed.
Vinny Lecavalier, still stuck on 49 goals, had seven shots. St. Louis hit a post with 5:51 remaining in the third, and Vinny Prospal missed an open net with 1:23 left. Eighteen missed the net.
"All those chances and nothing to show for it," Prospal said. "It's a tough road we're taking right now."
Tortorella agreed but reiterated his playoff guarantee: "We will get in. We'd like to go straight ahead instead of taking a left and going around the block. But we're going to get there."

OK, everyone here is blaming either Marc Denis or Torts. Really, goaltending shouldnt be the teams biggest worry... Forchecking is almost nonexistant, they play about one period a game, they lean SO much on #4, 26, and 19. But wheres the team? BOLTZ!

Bolts will probably get into playoffs, but not advance very far. Goalies the Achilles Heal. Homer's great for the relief guy, but our top goalie gets outplayed nearly every outing.

Wonder if it's time yet to admit that putting Denis' picture on the side of the Forum before he'd even played one game was a mistake? Maybe we can take it down until he earns it - Marty's pic anyone? Or put Andreychuck back up?

Jeez, it looks dark: TB has a superb #1 line, but only a #3 line & 2, #4s. Opponents need only focus their resources on stopping #1 guys & then mop up the rest. Send the Euros away.

This is my last year as a season ticket holder. This team has no consistent effort for a whole game, make rookie errors on defense and needs some consistent goaltending from someone. On top of that, the officials get worse every year. I need to find

An overall SV% of TBL is 0.883, the worst in whole League. Acute shortage of good goalie occured more than a year ago. Mr. Feaster, explain why the problem has not been solved yet? Too difficult to you or you don't undestand importance of a goalie?

Can't understand the strategy Coach! Homer should have started. Swithing D on the Vinny line didn't work either. Don't see the playoffs in our future. Maybe we'll have a Miracle like Ramsey's 80's team

Who is Feaster's great draft choice? We have no talent in the minors or young skill on the team. Keep #4,22,26,20,9,55,31,74,54,21 and dump the rest. 19 needs to score Goals, not assists. Our defensemen should buy tickets since they only watch.

Agree the refs sucked! Vinny should have an MVP year! TBL need a goalie. Torts should have started Homer! He got the teamwhere it was before slo-mo found his way between the pipes! I think Denis needs his vision checked! Contacts anyone!

Do not panic Tampa Bay - Bolts will pull together and finish strong with no less than a 6th seed. Atlanta in first round series will be fun to watch... If Holmquist starts the rest of the games.

When Atlanta GM Waddell guaranteed a playoff spot last year, he created a stir, but Atlanta did not make it. Waddell is still in his job - what did the guarantee mean: as much as Tortorella's. Johnny T. would screw up a free lunch - PULL THE COACH!

I know announcers are homers, but the Chief is rediculous. When Denis was pulled, he insisted that none of the goals were his fault. One through the 5 hole with a defenseman draped all over him, another from a sharp angle. Give me a break.

If Torts is guranteeing we make the playoffs he must have gotten Luongo or Brodeur and didn't tell us. Oh, by the way, Noreena, .906, 23-19 and 2.74 GA. Modin with 22 goals. Gotta love that trade!

It is a shame that what should be an MVP season by Vinny will be wasted by an overall bad team finish. And, who wants to just make the playoffs? Didn't we do that last year? No less than second round should be the team's goal.

This article shows one of the problems with the Lightning this year. Tortorellla doesn't play. Who's the player who's going to lead? What player is standing up and saying "I guarantee it". Who's our new Dave Andreychuck?

Thanks John, I was starting to get a little worried there, but now that we are guaranteed making the playoffs I can rest easier.
On a more serious note, lets see if the players back Torts up or leave him hanging.
GO BOLTS!

Whoopie...so they get in and get bounced right back out in the first round. Boy that is something to look forward to. Hello? Killer instinct? Some forechecking maybe? How about some goaltending? And for gods sake shoot top shelf!!

Would anyone besides me like to see player contrats become adjustable? Denis get nearly $3 million a year but plays like a rookie. Brad Richards is always missing a pass or causing a turnover. Let their salaries equate with their accountability.

I was there - how about some commentary on the pathetic officiating? The two hooking calls that gave the (stinkin) Panthers a 5 on 3 killed us. The bolts never got a similar call or gift power play.
