Today's Letters: Let the air out of bloated system

Re: Growth control tops summit, March 23 story. Business and other leaders met to plan Hernando County's economic future. They believe that, for example, more houses, transportation and schools are needed for more people to pay more taxes for more county government. The plan instead should be to reduce, by attrition, size and cost of bloated government. Such a plan, however, is unlikely to be favored by those determined to destroy pristine Hernando. James A. Willan, Brooksville Hickory Hill is a good idea for area We moved to Hernando County from Broward County four years ago. While some might assume that everyone leaving South Florida was just trying to get away from the hustle and bustle of that crowded circumstance, in our case it was simply a good opportunity. Having said that, we do like living in west Ridge Manor. The lots are generous in size and there are mature trees in the area. After living in a town with no vacant lots left, in a region that still continues to build at an alarming rate, we were not so naive to think that the area around State Road 50 and Interstate 75 would not begin to grow. This, in part, helped guide our choice in locating here because of the access to major roads and the expectation that with growth would come new businesses and retail stores. The past year has proved our decision to be true as there are now rumors that soon a Publix will be located just down the road from our home. We all know that with that pending outlet will follow the many support stores. This is good for the area. We have been reading with interest about the proposed Hickory Hill subdivision and for the life of us we cannot understand what the resistance is. We have seen poor planning at its worst in the South and it seems to us that with all the development and new shopping centers that will come near the interstate that it makes good sense to have a large planned community nearby. In the case of Hickory Hill, we have been on their Web site and it appears they have proposed the community as a transition from heavily developed areas to Spring Lake. We are sorry to disagree with a few of the residents in the area, but this is a very logical use of the land. Trust those of us with experience; growth is coming. It is best to plan ahead and do it right. Let Hickory Hill guide our region into the future. Todd and Susie Wieger, Brooksville Attacks during vigil are sickening The recent attack on the men and women on U.S. 19 near State Road 50 during their weekly vigil seeking peaceful resolutions to the war in Iraq, as done in thousands of communities across the nation, was vile and stupid. A man tore through the small assembly scattering, signs, pushing and shoving and yelling that they need to follow the Bush White House to finish the war in an act of patriotism that should define Americans everywhere. His excuse of being a veteran and serving in Iraq holds no substance. Veterans in great percentages find our presence in the Middle East unwarranted, numbering close to the 62 percent opposing the war. The teen-gang behavior of this guy's unbecoming antics and his swirling efforts to shout his veteran status should be questioned in court, with his followers sitting in court benches watching the procedures.
